Creative Matters: Episode 5 - with Liz Smith

Updated: May 26, 2021

Liz Smith is an embroidery artist living in Muriwai Beach, Auckland NZ.

Her business The Stitchsmith NZ brings you fresh, new designs for needlepoint cushion/pillow kits, cross stitch and embroidery kits and patterns.

Most of Liz's designs are drawn from the wonderful scenery in New Zealand where she lives and she is constantly inspired by the local flora and fauna here. She loves birds and a lot of her designs feature the gorgeous native birds that live in her garden and in the forest nearby. at Muriwai Beach.

I have done one of Liz's embroidery classes, which I loved, and Liz has inspired me to try something new and recreate my abstract paintings with thread.

Listen to this podcast below and hear Liz's inspiring story of the development of her business, her making and her journey to finally calling herself an artist, only 3 years ago.

"Working with needle and thread in a variety of media is my passion and my embroidery designs reflect my love of the environment in which I am so lucky to live."

Contemporary Needlepoint Kits from New Zealand

Needlepoint kits include everything you need to get started - pre-printed canvas, wool, needle and instructions - all in a handy carry bag. I use the best quality Zweigart canvas (12 count) from Germany and beautiful Appletons wool. Some kits contain luscious Strand yarn from New Zealand, and a there is also a sprinkling of DMC stranded floss in some kits.
