Our after-school art classes are designed to help children build both creative skills and confidence over time through consistent weekly practice.
Children explore a wide range of techniques including drawing, painting, colour mixing, design, and mixed media. Based on the chosen theme each term (more info below). They learn how to use different materials such as inks, watercolours, acrylics, oil pastels and collage to express their ideas.
Alongside these practical skills, children develop creative thinking, problem solving and the ability to make independent choices in their work. They learn to experiment, take risks, and trust their ideas in a supportive environment.
Over time, this regular creative practice helps children build focus, resilience and confidence — skills that extend far beyond the art room.
Our experienced educators guide children through a variety of creative exercises and techniques, encouraging them to problem solve and trust in their own creative abilities and authentic, expressive voice.
All bookings are for the entire term and should be made prior to term start in Week 2. If our sessions are not fully booked, we open late-enrollments. Late-enrollments must sign-up for the remaining sessions of the term.
Please check our booking link below for each venue and day or contact our administrator.
During the term:
-
Children will work towards completing 2-4 projects or final artworks
-
Sketchbooks can be purchased for $15 to contain all children's artwork each week, alternatively children will be encouraged to make a folder for their weekly process, sketches and artwork

We have really valued having Creative Matters operating at Ōrākei School. The programme provides our learners with meaningful opportunities to explore creativity, develop confidence, and express themselves through art in ways that complement and enrich our school curriculum.
Your classes create a positive and engaging environment where students are encouraged to take creative risks, problem-solve, and celebrate their individuality. We have seen students thoroughly enjoy the sessions, particularly those who thrive in hands-on and creative learning experiences. It has also been wonderful to provide families with an additional artistic opportunity within the school setting.
Creative Matters aligns strongly with our school values of Creativity, Self-Belief, and Excellence, and contributes positively to the wider culture of our kura. We appreciate the professionalism and passion you bring to your programme and the relationships you build with our students and whānau.
Principal Shanthan Naidu, Ōrākei School
This term, students will explore sculpture and illustration, transforming everyday materials into fun, whimsical artworks.
Inspired by Dame Lynley Dodd, they will create expressive characters through illustration, and, influenced by Minu Freitag, turn illustrations into playful paper mâché sculptures. The sculptural creations of Simon Lewis Wards will inspire students to design their own small-scale artworks.
Throughout the term, students will experiment with storytelling, painting, sculpture, and mixed media to bring imaginative ideas to life.
