Creatives in Schools - Tūrangawaewae Project #2 at Henderson Valley School

The same 9 children continued into term 2 2024 on the second part of the Creatives in Schools Tūrangawaewae project - 9 square plywood panels for the front of the school's Whare Nui. The intention was to add vibrancy and visual interest to the space and tell the story of our place.

Ākonga designed their own square artwork using symbols created for our installation in project #1 and added pattern. This part of the project had a focus on composition, form, colour, balance, contrast, grids and shapes as well as communicating ideas about our place. The children chose their colour palette aiming for more of a multicoloured joyful vibe.

We primed the treated plywood panels, including the sides.

We created pencil designs then drew them up on a square piece of paper and painted them - to consolidate our painting techniques, experiment with colour and to make sure the collaborative work was cohesive, balanced and visually effective.

We came together throughout the process to share, reflect and discuss.

Once we were happy with the paintings as a group we went on to draw up our squares and rectangles on to the primed boards. A challenging measuring and ruling exercise for most.

That's numeracy for the day!

We painted the squares and rectangles on to the boards then drew in the symbols with pencil and painted them on top.
